Safari from Zanzibar
to Tanzania’s Greatest Parks
ZanDrive takes you from Zanzibar’s white beaches to the heart of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Mikumi and Selous. Every transfer, flight connection, lodge, guide and park permit is arranged by us. You arrive and we handle everything else.
Zanzibar Is the Ideal Launchpad for a Tanzania Safari
Most travelers arriving in Tanzania land at Zanzibar International Airport before heading anywhere else on the mainland. That places you in one of the most strategically positioned locations for an African safari. Zanzibar sits just 35 kilometres off the Tanzanian coast with direct domestic flights to Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Dar es Salaam operating daily throughout the year. The logistics of pairing an Indian Ocean beach stay with a mainland wildlife safari are far simpler from Zanzibar than from any other entry point in East Africa.
ZanDrive is a fully licensed Zanzibar tour operator and travel agency that manages the complete journey from your hotel room in Stone Town, Nungwi or Paje all the way to your Serengeti lodge and back. We coordinate your Zanzibar airport transfer, book your domestic flight connection, arrange your game drive vehicle and safari lodge, and return you to Zanzibar for your international departure without a single logistical gap between any element.
Tanzania holds five of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations within two hours of Zanzibar Airport. The Serengeti is home to the largest animal migration on earth. Ngorongoro Crater holds the densest concentration of Big Five predators anywhere on the continent. Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous, covers an area larger than Switzerland and offers a more remote and intimate safari experience with boat safaris along the Rufiji River. Mikumi is the closest major park to Zanzibar and is reachable entirely by road for travelers wanting a budget-friendly day trip without a domestic flight.
No obligation to enquire. We reply in under 2 minutes and will build a personalised itinerary around your exact dates and budget.
Whether you have a single free day between beach stays or a full week to spend in the African bush, ZanDrive builds a safari package around your exact schedule and budget. Every price quoted includes all elements with no hidden charges and no surprises at departure.

Where Your Safari from Zanzibar Can Take You
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most iconic safari destination and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Covering 14,750 square kilometres of open savannah, the park hosts the Great Wildebeest Migration — a continuous circular movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 gazelles driven by the seasonal rains.
From Zanzibar, the Serengeti is reached via a short domestic flight to Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha followed by a road transfer or a connecting light aircraft to a Serengeti airstrip. ZanDrive coordinates all Zanzibar departure logistics and Serengeti ground arrangements so the transition from beach to bush requires no effort from you.
Game drives run at dawn and dusk when predator activity peaks. Lion prides, cheetah, leopard, wild dog and hyena are regularly encountered. The northern Serengeti between July and October offers the famous Mara River crossings where thousands of wildebeest cross into crocodile-filled waters.
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera forming a natural enclosure that holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on earth. The 260-square-kilometre crater floor is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals including all of the Big Five, a large resident population of black-maned lions, and one of the most reliable black rhinoceros sightings anywhere in East Africa.
Most ZanDrive clients combine a Ngorongoro game drive with their Serengeti itinerary on either the first or final day. The two parks are under three hours apart by road, making a combined 3-day package the most efficient way to experience both in a single trip from Zanzibar. Crater descent permits must be pre-arranged and ZanDrive includes all permit processing in the package price.
The crater floor also holds large flamingo flocks on its soda lake, permanent hippo pools, and Maasai cattle herds that share the caldera with the wildlife — a uniquely Tanzanian scene found nowhere else on earth.
Selous and Nyerere National Park
Now formally protected as Nyerere National Park, Selous is Africa’s largest single protected wildlife area. Despite holding the continent’s largest elephant and wild dog populations, it remains among the least visited major parks in Tanzania. The park sits just 45 minutes by domestic aircraft from Zanzibar Airport, making it the most accessible multi-day safari destination from Zanzibar for travelers with limited time.
Unlike the open savannah of the Serengeti, Selous offers a fundamentally different safari environment. Dense miombo woodland, the wide Rufiji River and its tributaries, and significant hippo and crocodile populations create an atmosphere that feels genuinely remote. A boat safari on the Rufiji River is included in all ZanDrive Selous packages and provides a completely different perspective from the standard land-based game drive.
Mikumi National Park
Mikumi is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park and the most accessible from Zanzibar for travelers who want a safari without boarding a domestic aircraft. The journey uses the morning ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam followed by a four-hour road transfer into the park, with game drives running through the afternoon before the return to Zanzibar in the evening.
Despite being the budget-friendly option, Mikumi delivers genuine big-game encounters. The park’s open Mkata floodplains attract large herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Lion prides are regularly spotted in the grasslands and Hippo Pools is a specific attraction included on every ZanDrive Mikumi itinerary.
For families with children, honeymooners on a budget, or any traveler with a single free day between international connections through Zanzibar, the Mikumi day trip represents outstanding value and a genuine Tanzania safari experience without overnight accommodation or domestic flight costs.

Best Time for a Safari from Zanzibar
Tanzania safaris operate year-round but the wildlife viewing experience varies considerably with the seasons. Understanding what happens in each park at different times of year allows you to choose the package that delivers the most for your specific travel dates.
The Serengeti hosts exceptional wildlife throughout the year, but the most dramatic period for the Great Migration river crossings falls between July and October when enormous herds attempt to cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. This is widely considered the single most spectacular wildlife event on earth. If your travel dates are flexible, aligning a Serengeti safari from Zanzibar with the July to October window maximizes what you will see.
The dry season running broadly from June through October is generally the most reliable period for game viewing across all Tanzanian parks. Animals concentrate around water sources, vegetation is lower and visibility improves significantly. Road conditions into Mikumi and across the Serengeti are most dependable during this window. The wet season from November through May brings green landscapes and a different but equally rewarding set of experiences: the calving season between January and March produces the largest concentration of newborn wildebeest on earth, with lions, cheetahs and hyenas in close attendance throughout the southern Serengeti plains.
Selous and Mikumi offer strong game viewing across all twelve months of the year. The Selous boat safari is particularly outstanding between July and November when water levels allow closer wildlife access along the Rufiji River banks. The Mikumi day trip road route operates year-round without seasonal closures. Whatever month you are traveling, ZanDrive will advise on the conditions expected and recommend the park and package duration that delivers the best experience for your dates.
Dry season. Best overall game viewing. Mara River crossings in Serengeti. Reliable road conditions across all parks.
Wildebeest calving in southern Serengeti. High predator concentration. Green landscapes. Value lodge pricing available.
Short rains begin. Short grass improves visibility. Migratory birds present. Good lodge availability and rates.
Both parks operate 12 months. Selous boat safari best July to November. Mikumi day trip road route operates all year.
